Under The Hawthorn Tree by Marita Conlon-McKenna – Book Nook

Hi book fans! Welcome back to another review in Abigail’s Book Nook. So this review is on Under The Hawthorn Tree by Marita Conlon-McKenna. Ring a bell? I chose this book because I started reading it at school and I was quite interested so I read it by myself instead!

So it’s the Famine in Ireland and Eily, Michael, and Peggy’s parents have both disappeared. It’s been weeks and there is still no sign of them. So with sudden desperation, Eily decides to travel to their Aunt’s bakery in Castletaggart. Will they make it?

I absolutely loved this book! I love reading classics. I’m even in the middle of reading Little Women. This book was so heartbreaking because of all the hardships the children and their parents had to face. It’s so sad the way the children never got the happy childhood they wanted. Having no toys, no proper education, having to go to work at such young ages without a break and getting terrible injuries. It makes me realise just how lucky I am. I have a roof over my head, a school, a family and food.

My favorite character in the book is Eily, since their Mother has disappeared it was like Eily’s duty to be the second Mother. She was like a little Mother to Michael and Peggy. I also think it must be hard for her having to cope all on her own with no help to look after her sibling’s. She also has to gather food and cook. I would not like to be in her shoes.

So that’s it from me guys. Actually I would love if you could send me a few comments and let me know what you think of my review because that would mean the world to me.

Keep reading everybody!
