“Alice must unlock the grim mystery of the house before she becomes the next victim..”
Hello and welcome to the RandomThingsTours Blog Tour for One By One By DW Gillespie.
About The Book
“The Easton family has just moved into an old house and Alice, the youngest, is excited to explore the new place. Her excitement turns to dread as she discovers a child’s drawing of a family just like hers under the wallpaper. When family members begin to disappear, it is up to her to unlock the mystery before she becomes the next victim.”
What I Thought
It’s always a bit daunting moving house, even more so when the house you move into seems to have a mind of its own.. “character”, is strangely laid out.. “quirky”, makes noises in the dark.. “a bit old”.. Alice isn’t sure how she feels about this house, like her daddy she is strangely taken in by it but she also can’t help feeling like something is off, there another presence. Then she discovers the painting on the wall and a diary appears in her room, soon all hell breaks loose.
One By One is really creepy and unsettling and as the story goes deeper it becomes strangely sad too. We hear everything from 10 year old Alice’s point of view and everything is always that bit creepier in horror when kids are involved. Sometimes I felt like Alice sounded a bit older that she is but then that could have been from outside influences, she does have an older brother after all. Alice already seems to have some issues going on even before they move into the house, she’s quiet, withdrawn, a daydreamer and seems to have voices in her head. When things start to get weird it’s no wonder no one wants to listen to Alice.
I really like this book, it had a great flow to it and just the right amount of tension to reel you in and keep you on edge. The whole setting with the creepy house our near the woods, no neighbours nearby and then the snow arriving gave it all a bit of a Shining vibe to it, especially when Daddy seems to change.. he’s not quite himself in that house thinks Alice.
A really great read perfect for kicking off spooky season.
About The Author
A fan of all things dark and horrific, D.W. Gillespie has been writing horror, sci-fi,and fantasy for longer than he would like to admit. After years of daydreaming, he started taking it seriously in college after a creative writing class helped spark his motivation. After winning a local writing award, he realized that his path forward was clear. In the years since, he’s been featured in many publications, both online and in print. He’s the author of more than a dozen novels, including The Toy Thief, Still Dark, and Handmade Monsters. For One by One, Gillespie was influenced by his experience of moving houses often when growing up. One particular house was supposedly haunted (according to previous tenants)and became specially inspirational, and he knew he wanted it to feature in one of his books as a character in the story.
A lifelong native of Middle Tennessee, he still lives there today with his wife
and two children.
Many thanks to Anne from RandomThingsTours and FlameTreePress for having me on this tour and a copy of the book to review. All opinions are my own and I am not paid to give them.
