The Girl In Red by Christina Henry

Beware

The wolves

In the woods..

“It’s not safe for anyone alone in the woods. There are predators that come out at night: critters and coyotes, snakes and wolves. But the woman in the red jacket has no choice. Not since the Crisis came, decimated the population, and sent those who survived fleeing into quarantine camps that serve as breeding grounds for death, destruction, and disease. She is just a woman trying not to get killed in a world that doesn’t look anything like the one she grew up in, the one that was perfectly sane and normal and boring until three months ago. There are worse threats in the woods than the things that stalk their prey at night. Sometimes, there are men. Men with dark desires, weak wills, and evil intents. Men in uniform with classified information, deadly secrets, and unforgiving orders. And sometimes, just sometimes, there’s something worse than all of the horrible people and vicious beasts combined.”

I loved Christina’s The Mermaid so I was really looking forward to reading The Girl In Red and just wow this book is fantastic! Did someone say fairytale apocalypse? Um hell yeah! The Girl In Red is such a treat you’ll want to sink your teeth in and devour it whole! This isn’t your normal fairytale retelling, it’s dark and scary (how fairytales used to be) and is about survival when all of the odds are against you.. as it says on the back “Red doesn’t like to think of herself as a killer, but she isn’t about to let herself get eaten up just because she is a woman alone in the woods..”

A thoroughly engaging read, perfect if you love re-tellings but also perfect if you enjoy a good apocalypse survival tale.

Thank you to Titan Books for sending me a copy of The Girl In Red to review, I also took part in their Bookstagram tour. All opinions are my own and I am not paid to give them.

  1. Great review Sara, I absolutely loved this one, I never wanted it to end! This was my first Christina Henry read, now I’m going to have to buy all of her previous books 😀

  2. This sounds SO good!!

So my best friend is letting me borrow his copy of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, and they are SO much darker than the ones I have in my Hans Christian Anderson collection. I’m loving them! I am reading a few a day and they are awesome! I want to read the original fairy tale from now on before I read a re-telling. I just read The 12 Dancing Princesses because I recently read The House of Salt and Sorrows and the re-telling was SO well done and I loved to read the original, it really added to the experience!

      1. His copy is GORGEOUS. Gold edges and everything! My Hans Christian Anderson collection is a beloved hardback as well, but not nearly as pretty. Every re-telling that I read I am now looking up in either of those books!
