After spending the last number of weeks rereading the Harry Potter Series I finished them today and started The Cursed Child. I did my best to take my time but I had it read in 3 hours. Just as I couldn’t put my copy of The Philosopher’s Stone down 19 years ago I couldn’t move until I read it all.
Now before I go any further let’s be completely clear here, while it says it’s the 8th story don’t be misguided it is NOT the 8th book. It is separate from the book series, it doesn’t add to it and it shouldn’t take away from it unless you let it. I never wanted an 8th book as it was hard enough to get over the series ending to begin with, but this is a script by Jack Thorne based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne and I really enjoyed it.
I imagine seeing it on stage would be utterly fantastic. It is, in my opinion, aimed at an older audience (perhaps the original Potter generation) I found it funny and enjoyed the friendship that was portrayed. I’m struggling really hard here because I do not want to give anything away but I had a couple of issues centred around 2 characters I felt they didn’t need to be in the story at all and where just there for nostalgia, I didn’t like how their relationship was portrayed as to me it didn’t seem true to them. If you’ve read it lets see if you can figure out who I’m talking about.
I know a lot of people were disappointed but to be honest I think they were expecting too much, there was never going to be an 8th book, the series is perfect the way it is but to have this additional story added on is a welcome addition in my opinion. I would love to read more backstories on some of the original characters.. Luna for instance I would love to read more about what became of her. Recently on Pottermore I read about Ilvermorny the great North American school of magic and I was fascinated by it, the detail J.K. Rowling goes into for these worlds she has created makes them so real for us. I am looking forward to Fantastic Beasts too!
Have you read it, how did you feel about it?? No spoilers please!!
I din’t enjoy it al all 😦 I thought a lot of it was really unnecessary and I just read finished it for the sake of reading it. I had no expectations for it – I knew it was basically fan fiction, and I was ok with that, and I knew it was a play, and I actually really enjoyed the first part of it, but when it started chipping away at some of the most important parts of the book it really upset me. Also the depiction of Ron was just ridiculous.

I hated the cursed child so much I couldn’t finish the book and will be returning it to the store since I only read a short amount of the book. It was horrible. 😦

Ah no did you really think it was that bad? Did you know it was going to be a script?

I didn’t love it, I knew it was going to be a play and I had no problem with that, but it really lacked the magic that JK Rowling brings with her descriptions and settings. I thought it ventured into incredibly weird territory more than once (particularly with THAT kiss and the whole B/V thing), also didn’t like how Ron was basically a parody of himself and how things just seemed to be thrown into the plot for nostalgia sake, or how Harry’s other kids weren’t really mentioned. I’m still happy to have read it, and I’m looking forward to the short stories coming soon, but I don’t think of it as part of the series.

That’s exactly it though it’s not part of the series and that’s the mistake they made in advertising, they should have made it clear that it was separate and then people wouldn’t have been disappointed. Ye really didn’t like Ron 😦

Well, I enjoyed it. Lol! Definitely had its flaws (Ron… Poor Ron) but overall I liked it. The story between Harry, Albus, and Scorpius was great and moving. Which is probably why I like the narrow scope of the play.
Now I’m just waiting for the play to start touring. Great review!

I agree with you that the people who didn’t like it were expecting too much!
